RAU® Climatewall in the Duisburg 6-Lakes-Wedau urban development project
RAU® Climatewall as noise protection in Duisburg, 6-Seen-Wedau
The “Duisburg 6 Seen Wedau – Wohnen am Wasser” project is the largest urban development project in NRW. Around 3,000 residential units are being built on the former DB site. To protect the new district, a 2.6 km long and up to ten meter high green RAU® Climatewall is being built – the largest of its kind in the world.

Job details & challenges:
The “Duisburg 6 Seen Wedau – Wohnen am Wasser” project is currently North Rhine-Westphalia’s largest urban development project. It involves the redevelopment of the former DB site in Duisburg-Wedau with the aim of closing the urban development gap between Neudorf, Bissingheim and Wedau and creating up to 3,000 residential units in four different districts. The Sechs-Seen-Platte as a local recreation area and the Wedau sports forest are to be connected and generate a wide range of leisure activities for residents and new residents of the future neighborhoods.
Project objective:
As part of the new development, the construction of a noise barrier in the transition area to the existing DB site and an allotment garden in the southernmost section of the development area is also planned. With a total length of 2.6 km and a height of ten meters, the largest green noise barrier in the world will be built here, which will be planted with more than 13,000 climbing plants at the end. The RAU® climatewall impresses with its low emission values and green corridor-like character, which forms a spatial and identity-creating backdrop for the development area. The noise barrier consists of an earth wall with heights between 1.40 m and 8.00 m and a green noise barrier with heights between 2.50 m and 8.00 m on top of the wall. Planting on both sides along the base of the wall with native climbing plants appropriate to the location and an adapted irrigation system ensure rapid full greening. The climatewall consists of species-appropriate and diverse planting and thus not only creates a harmonious atmosphere, but also serves as a biotope complex for flora and fauna on the whole.
Product solution:
Results
- A 2.6-kilometer-long RAU® Climatewall is being built in Duisburg-Wedau.
- The noise barrier has an almost continuous construction height of ten meters.
- It protects the residents of a new district from the noise of the railroad line between Duisburg-Wedau and Ratingen.
- The RAU® Climatewall achieves an airborne sound insulation value of DLR = 68 dB and an absorption value of DL𝛼 = 20 dB.
- The green wall stretches across the entire development area and effectively separates it from the busy railroad line.
- In addition to noise protection, it contributes to a natural landscape on the 60-hectare site.
