RAU® as a research partner – recycling rotor blades with the KIT

Three dismantled rotor blades of one lie on the ground next to the base of a wind turbine.

Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) want to investigate how used rotor blades from wind turbines can be better recycled. RAU® is one of the research partners in the pioneering “BladeReUse” project.

After around 20 – 30 years, the majority of wind turbines, which are among the most important sources of renewable energy in Germany, have reached the end of their service life. The wind turbines are then usually dismantled. However, there is an unresolved problem in terms of sustainability: the methods commonly used to date to recycle large quantities of the fiber composite materials from which the rotor blades are made lead to final recycling through incineration and emit a lot of CO2.
