The infrastructure project at the Bielefeld-Sennestadt site comprises the expansion of the UPS distribution center and the construction of a modern noise barrier system on an area of around 2,700 square meters. A future-oriented solution that combines functionality, noise protection and sustainability is being created in the immediate vicinity of the adjacent residential development.

The expansion of the UPS site in Bielefeld-Sennestadt into a HUB distribution center requires compliance with statutory noise levels. In the vicinity of the industrial area, commercial noise is generated on the premises, in particular by vehicle access and exit routes as well as parking and loading processes.
Project objective:
The expected noise impact on neighboring residential areas was predicted using acoustic simulation calculations. The result was that the areas adjacent to the distribution center exceed the immission limits both during the day and at night. This result prompted the planning of a noise barrier system to protect the residential areas and residents at the expanded UPS site from noise. The site is located within the landscape of the eastern Münsterland chalk bay known as the “Senne”. It is characterized by nutrient-poor, loose sands, which are particularly stable and therefore represent a good prerequisite for the construction of a noise barrier.
Product solution:
UPS opted for the RAU® Climatewall and RAU® Climatewall S products. RAU® Climatewall S is a good alternative for the site conditions due to its minimal space requirements. For the construction of a new noise barrier on the UPS site on Fuggerstraße in Bielefeld, the first step was to remove the forest and trees. Humus-rich topsoil in the area of the construction project was completely removed and taken away. The excavated soil could be reused to fill the noise barrier.

Results
- The noise barrier system extends over a total length of approx. 545 meters.
- It reaches a construction height of up to six meters.
- The system reliably protects the expanded UPS site in Bielefeld-Sennestadt and the surrounding residential areas from noise.
- It consists of a combination of Climatewall and RAU® Climatewall S.
- The climatewall achieves airborne sound insulation values of DLR = 68 dB and absorption values of DL𝛼 = 20 dB, while RAU® Climatewall S offers DLR = 27 dB and DL𝛼 = 12 dB.
- The noise barrier encloses the approximately 2,700 square meter site of the UPS distribution center.
